For the second consecutive month, the fishing sector shows a positive result. The expansion is mainly due to the increase in the extraction of anchovy for Indirect Human Consumption (IHC).

The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) reported that, in May 2024, the gross production value of the extractive fishing sector registered a significant growth of 329.2%, compared to May 2023, reaching S/ 385.2 million, (USD 100.9 M) representing approximately 0.8% of the National GDP.

The head of PRODUCE, Sergio González Guerrero, stated that this result is mainly attributed to the higher production value of resources for indirect human consumption, such as anchovy, whose first season in the north-central zone has been a success.

“For the second consecutive month, fishing shows a positive result for the Peruvian economy. We are convinced that this year the sector will recover compared to 2023,” he added.

It should be noted that, in the accumulated period from January to May 2024, the gross production value of the extractive fishing sector registers a growth of 43.7% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Landings increased more than 1000%

Likewise, Minister González reported that, in May 2024, the total landing of hydrobiological resources totaled 1 million 554 thousand tons, a figure 1076.1% higher than that recorded in May 2023.

The head of PRODUCE, Sergio González Guerrero, maintained that this expansion is mainly due to the increase in the extraction of anchovy for Indirect Human Consumption (IHC), given the timely opening of the first season in the north-central area.

“In May, the anchovy fishing season was enormously successful, unloading more than 1.45 million tons in the ports of Malabrigo, Chimbote, Coishco, Callao, among others,” he stated.

In addition, he assured that in the fishing of resources for direct human consumption (CHD) in the month of May, there was a greater landing of specimens for the table of all Peruvian homes, due to the greater availability of horse mackerel (689.2%), bonito ( 75.4%), anchovy for human consumption (599.3%) and mackerel (298.7%).
